How To Operate a CNC Press Brake

CNC Press Brake Machine

A CNC press brake machine is an important tool that incorporates a computer numerically controlled system (CNC). It enables it to efficiently manipulate metal sheets and bend them whether they are several meters long or merely some millimetres short.

There are two types of CNC press brake machines, and they are:

  • Down Forming - It comprises a fixed bed below with a V-shaped tool attached to it and a top beam above, which is also shaped like a “V.” The top beam receives the force, and it presses the sheet against the bed below.
  • Top Forming - It has similar parts to the down forming press brake except that the portion which moves is the bed or the bottom while the top beam is stationary.

Operating a CNC Press Brake

The CNC press brake machine is a powerful mechanical tool powered by either electricity or hydraulics. The machine has an AI program, the CNC, which allows it to make very accurate, precise bends.

  • Before using the machine, it is required to perform safety checks. Checking must include whether the grounding, switch, motor, and circuit are normal and control parts are in the proper positions.
  • All the important parts of the machine must be cleaned before use, as any piece of debris can affect the operation of the shearing machine.
  • Power on the machine before switching on the control panel. Start the pump. Do these in precise order, and do not interchange or reverse the order of these steps.
  • Before bending, a test run must be conducted. Undivided attention must be given to the stroke adjustment when operating the press brake machine.
  • For the bending notch, it is advisable to choose the bend notch, which is 8 times the width of the plate’s thickness.
  • The metal sheet needs to be well compressed when bending to prevent injury
  • The operator must not stand behind the machine when it is in operation.
  • Should there be any problem during the operation, the machine should be immediately stopped and inspected.
  • Mould contact ratio of both upper and lower dies needs to be frequently checked
  • Pressure gauge instructions must be strictly complied with.
  • Cut the power before adjusting the die as well as the plate
  • To turn the press brake machine off, the operator must exit the CNC system before shutting the power supply off.

When using the CNC press brake machine, the operator must strictly follow procedures and comply with instructions. Any deviation may damage the press brake and also cause serious injury.
